Dredging

Dredging

We offer dredging services

Dredging is often carried out because the port wants to offer greater capacity by allowing larger ships to berth. This can be done by dredging by one metre, and another metre after a few years.

When we deepen a harbour channel from say 6 to 8 metres, this depth can be sufficient for many years to come. The project might involve dredging alone, or be carried out in connection with a port expansion. After the port expansion, it is likely that a clean-up will be necessary after some time – depending on how much traffic there is in the harbour.

Harbour clean-up
When a port is in operation, sediment is deposited over a number of years as the ships manoeuvre. The water depth becomes lower as sludge is swirled around and settles on the bottom. In time it will be necessary to do a clean-up/dredging, so that the port can maintain the water depths shown on the charts.

We perform clean-ups in many parts of Denmark, and it varies greatly how often this is needed. In some ports it is every 10 years, while in others it is every year, and there are some ports with so much traffic that we clean them up 6-7 times each year.

Dredging shipping lanes
Shipping lanes are often dredged when dredging the associated port. The traffic in the shipping lane causes it to slowly silt up, and it must be cleaned up after several years so that the depths shown on the charts are maintained.
